How To Create A Vision Board

Note: This is Day 28 in the “Recharge Your Creative Batteries in 31 Days” Challenge. For the rest of July, we’ll be posting different ways for you to get yourself on the path to living in a creative flow and reaching your writing goals. Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss any.

When you picture your dreams, what do you see? If you can’t answer that question, it’s probably because you’ve never taken the time to really think about what your dreams would look like if you reached them.

If you’re not sure what it would look like, I highly recommend you take some time to really think about it. Answer the tough questions about yourself. These may be questions you don’t always like the answers of, but they will help you get to the bottom of what you really want out of your life.

Once you have an answer to what your dreams will look like, you can use this creativity tool to help bring your dreams into reality.

Why Use A Vision Board?

A vision board is a board where you use images and words to depict your goals and the outcome of those goals. Now let me just say that your dreams may not always work out the way you picture them, so it’s best not to get attached to “what it looks like” and instead just focus on the feeling you’ll get from reaching that particular dream.

Using a vision board can help you create—inside your mind and body—the feelings you would feel when you reach whatever dreams you’ve depicted on the board.

Your feelings and thoughts are strong, like magnets, and they allow you to attract either positive things or negative things based on what you think and how you feel, about yourself and your life.

One way to shift your thoughts positive is to use the images from your vision board to hold those good, positive feelings in your mind and body.

Creating Your Vision Board

It’s pretty easy to create a vision board and you can even create separate boards for different goals if you want to.

Here’s what you need to make one:

  • A piece of poster board, any size (or you can use a bulletin board is you don’t want to glue everything down)
  • scissors
  • glue (or push pins if you want to change the items on your board every now and then—this is what I do)
  • magazines, photos, visual representations of your writing, creativity, health, life, etc., goals
  • a picture of yourself
  • your name (written on a piece of paper or created using magazine letters, etc—you always want to make sure you are represented somewhere on your board)

Here’s how you put it all together:

1

Step 1: Cut out words and pictures from magazines that you feel best represent the goals you have. The most important thing is to choose pictures and words that help you create the feeling of reaching them.

2

Step 2:Arrange everything on the poster (bulletin) board in front of you. Move it around until it looks how you want it to.

3

Step 3:

Glue everything down (unless you’re going the push-pin route, in which case, pin everything down).

This photo is of the vision board I created about a year ago to help me attain my big goal/dream of quitting my day job to work for myself full time. On March 20, 2012, I did just that.
Never underestimate the power images, thoughts and feelings have on your reality.

When you’re finished you’ll have an amazing vision board that will inspire you to reach your dreams and goals.

Spend a few minutes every day looking at it and really taking in the images, feeling the feelings that you’ll get when you attain each and every goal on the board.

Awesome idea! I can’t wait to put one together! This might be a silly question but where are some good places to get old magazines?

It’s not a silly question at all! You can find old magazines a couple ways:

      1) Visit your local public library–chances are they have a whole bunch available for the taking (or buying for a low price, my library charges 10 cents per magazine)

      2) Ask your friends and family to save their magazines for you and if they have any old ones ready for recycling

  2. I love the idea of a vision board. Made one years ago (called it a ‘manifestation collage’ then) and have been collecting materials for some new ones lately. Just need to focus on the creation! (And not get all caught up in making in look perfect!)

I got some super cheap magazines at Salvation Army stores and other thrift stores. Another great source is hair salons – you can ask one or two to save their old magazines for you.

Thanks for the great inspiration to get going on my vision board!
